Conferences Here are some highlights of the April 29,2005 conference, "Toward a Healthy Sexuality: Recovery from Abuse & Addictions."
In her keynote address, "Healthy Sexuality After Abuse and Addiction," Wendy Maltz provided the CERTS for Positive, Healthy Sexuality: Consent, Equality, Respect, Trust, and Safety. She discussed therapist self care and techniques to help clients relearn touch. Maltz is an internationally recognized psychotherapist and sex therapist in private practice in Eugene, Oregon. She is author of the sexual abuse recovery classic, The Sexual Healing Journey, as well as, Incest and Sexuality, Private Thoughts, Passionate Hearts, and Intimate Kisses. She produced two highly acclaimed recovery videos, “Partners in Healing” and “Relearning Touch.” Wendy has more than 25 years of clinical experience treating sexual abuse, addiction and sexuality concerns. Corley is Director of Family Services at Santé Center for Healing and winner of the Carnes Award and Clinician’s Most Valuable Article Award for her work on disclosure on which her book Disclosing Secrets is based. As co-owner of Santé she has provided therapy to over 1000 clients with sexual addiction histories. Licensed as a marriage and family therapist and chemical dependency counselor, Deb has over 20 years experience working with and conducting research on addictive disorders, sexual abuse and prevention and other issues of high risk families. She is asked to present at numerous conferences annually both internationally and in the US. She is also co-author of Embracing Recovery.
Alexandra Katehakis discussed "Developing a Sane Ideal - Sexuality and Recovery" Katehakis said, "the search for perfection in relationships and sex caused many addicts to discard the relationships before they knew their potential. Sexual vitality comes from relationships. The challenges of closeness renew sexual interest and deepen the meaning of sex." Katehakis is a psychotherapist whose private practice specializes in sexual/marital therapy. In addition, Ms. Katehakis serves as Clinical Supervisor and sex addiction specialist for The Sexual Recovery Institute in Los Angeles. She has lectured for LA-CAMFT, Women’s Association of Addiction Treatment, Pepperdine University, and appeared on Cyberradiotv and WebMD, both live on-line Internet programs, as a sexual addiction expert. She is a co-founder of the Walking-In-Your-Shoes Group and has been active in developing this transpersonal body-mind therapy process for the past 13 years. Also, Ms Katehakis has taught workshops on healthy sexuality in Greece and has been published in the Journal of Sexual Addiction and Compulsivity. Her professional affiliations include membership in the the Society for the Advancement of Healthy Sexuality, American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists and California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists.
RMCSAC board members Mary C. Collins and Tom Olschner addressed "Integrating Couples Therapy With Sexual Addiction Recovery." They provided a conceptual framework for working with couples - "crisis stage, individuation stage, rebuilding stage, consolidation and maintenance stage." They discussed the role of the therapist, including working with resistance and transference. Mary C. Collins is a registered nurse and a Licensed Family Therapist and has been in private practice in Denver for almost 20 years. She has lectured at various colleges around Colorado and has been on radio and television talking about addictions. Tom Olschner, PhD, is a licensed psychologist and a Sex Addiction Therapist Certifier in private practice in Westminster, Colorado. He has specialized in the treatment of sexual addiction since 1988 when he trained with Patrick Carnes. He also specializes in marital therapy and sexual therapy for couples.
